I cannot afford to pay the big bucks for new exhaust so I was wondering if it is possible to remove the baffles from the stock pipes and still run the bike without harm to the engine? Clamp the vice grips onto the baffle, and twist the baffle to remove it from the interior of the exhaust pipe. The baffle is a metal piece inside the pipe that muffles the sound of your Harley's engine exhaust. Remove the baffle from the lower pipe by repeating the process. If you leave it in and just "gut it" (pain in the arse BTW) then it serves as an expansion chamber. The exhaust pulses mix in that chamber with the backflow exhaust and cause a nice mellow rumble. The key to removing your baffles is to disturb the inner plate that the baffle is welded to as little as possible. This will slightly increase exhaust sound but it is a nice tone and not as loud as aftermarket mufflers.Jan 30, 2009 · OK I was thinking of the baffles that the flow goes through the wrap unlike what you are saying with the straight through baffles. Using that type of wrap will probably remove any sound deadening that you would get from the regular baffle wrap through the perforated core . If the stage 1 pipes have 2 baffles/pipe, I can't see the process being that much different. I would first see how far in the rear baffle is. You should be able to cut it out with a hole saw. Not sure if the diameter is different though. I tried puching out muflers, removing baffles, making baffles etc without producing the sound and performance I wanted. An exhaust may just look like a glorified piece of chromed pipe but there is a whole lot of technology in the design.
