Funny, I tried Black MZ in 45-120 and 44 Russian and found it produced too much velocity and smelled nasty. Sure wish I could talk ya into givin' up on that Pyrodex stuff. But, yes, the 3F or Pyrodex "P" will give slightly higher velocity and pressure than the 2F or "RS" stuff. Do ya think your "old RS" stuff is "P", mis-labeled? I don't know that I would continue using that old stuff in an original. If it was real black...

FWIW for me 777 (both 2f and 3f) I have had fewer misfire/ignition problems, less hydroscopic, less fouling, and better accuracy over pyrodex. Loose has been superior to pellets in accuracy and ignition as well. I used RS select loose over the pellets and then swtiched to 777 2f and now playing with 3f as I am settling on lighter charges.
Once I burn it all up I also have a pound of 777 to play with, it works out to the same cost per shot as real powder so which ever works better will be my choice for the cap & ball. I won't be using Pyrodex in my rifle but if 777 shoots well in the pistol I will try it on my rifle as an alternate for when I can't get real powder locally.

Volume 777 FFg weighs 73.3 gr. But powder scales measure weight. Chart 1 converts weights of Black Powder (Goex FFg) to volume equivalent weights of American Pioneer Powder FFg, Hodgdon 777 FFg, Goex Pinnacle FFg and FFFg and Pyrodex RS. Since 777 is, 15% more powerful than Goex FFg, those adjustments are included.
Oct 20, 2014 · Thanks guys. I use Winchester 209 primers, they have been reliable with the Pyrodex pellets. I did notice the lack of a black tip on the 777 pellets. Time on the range should give me an idea about how the 777 pellets work in my setup. The rifle is a Millenium Designed MDM Buckwacka .45 cal inline. I love it. As far as I know they aren't made ... Pyrodex is the most common "black powder substitute." It is really the only synthetic black powder "performance" substitute in common use. By performance substitute, I refer to a charge of loose powder measure by volume. A 100 grain volumetric charge of Pyrodex RS (Rifle/Shotgun) is very close in performance to Goex FFg black powder.
