To save time and resources, I highly recommend growing mycelium on agar before going to grain spawn. Even if an agar plate begins to show signs of contamination, the healthy mycelium is still salvageable by conducting an agar to agar transfer. Bleach is effective against bacteria, but since bacteria isn't a contaminant of fruiting substrates, there is no reason to dunk in it. As well as you should see the lightest circle of dryness appear around the bottom holes. If you get big dry circles around the bottome holes, they are either too loose or you have to much air circulating in the room.
